Most environmentally conscious people live each day trying to make better decisions to improve our environment. Now we can also make good choices for the environment after we die as well. A common burial is an environmentally costly endeavor. A new trend referred to as a green burial is quickly catching on and gaining momentum. A green burial utilizes methods and materials that decrease the impact on the environment.
Part of the estate planning process is to educate yourself on burial options and make those known to those left behind to execute for you.
There are many new advances in burial options that are also good for the environment. A few of these burial options include:
- Woven, cardboard or simple wood caskets now come in a variety of styles. These are considered biodegradable for burial and can also be used for cremation.
- Biodegradable urns with seeds or tree saplings above the urn. They come with organic material that helps to minimize the cremated material so that the tree will grow above the urn as the urn biodegrades.
- Floating urns that eventually dissolve in water.
