With the explosion of tiny homes peppering the communities throughout Maryland, it is no surprise that the trend expands into the senior market.
Two main types of alternative living arrangements for seniors are:
Granny Pods: Small cottages placed on the property of family members with all the high-tech conveniences needed to live independently but literally only steps away from a caregiver. This is designed as a long-term solution for a senior with minimal medical issues.
MedCottages: An affordable alternative to a nursing home, this modular medical dwelling is designed to be temporarily placed on a caregiver’s property for rehabilitation or extended care purposes. There are units designed to be placed in garages, living rooms or outside the home on the property. This option is designed for seniors who need more specialized medical care than can be found in a typical home, yet he or she prefers to stay close to caregivers rather than live in a nursing home facility.
These homes range in size but are mostly a large master suite filled with safety features like hand railings, first aid supplies, lighted floorboards and soft floor materials to protect against falls. Zoning laws and homeowner association regulations may impact the type of structure allowed on each individual property.
