Book Club: Helpful Elder Law Books

When it comes to estate planning, long-term care planning and other elder law issues, you may find yourself with more questions than answers. We provide a lot of resources on our blog and through our community seminars, but also understand that sometimes you simply want a great book chock full of information to help you make informed choices on these topics. Below is a list of several that we find may be helpful:

Medicaid Planning from A to Z

By K Gabriel Keiser

This book is geared more towards professionals but is very comprehensive on the strategies to qualify for Medicaid. Updated in 2019, it was written by an elder law attorney with over 25 years of experience. Some of the tips in this book include:

- how to best title your home

- how to make proper gifts/transfers

- the use of “Medicaid” annuities

- tips on the “spend down” approach

-ways to avoid the state’s reimbursement claim following a nursing home resident’s death.

Helping Hands Across Time: Keeping Family Money in the Family

By Mary G Nash

This easy-to-read book covers a wide range of topics facing the elderly today. Some of those topics covered include power of attorney documents, advance directives, wills, guardianship issues, Medicaid and Medicare planning, long-term care planning, financial planning, trusts and charitable giving.

Living Trusts for Everyone

By Ronald Farrington Sharp

This book explains the benefits of creating trusts over using wills. It is not a do-it-yourself book, but explains in common language everything you need to know about living trusts, including the different types, benefits and tips on simplifying the funding process as well as strategies to lower legal fees.

ABA/AARP Checklist for My Family: A Guide to My History, Financial Plan and Final Wishes

By Sally Burch Hurme

A new resource from AARP in conjunction with the American Bar Association, this book guides you through the process of gathering in one place your finances, legal documents, online accounts, wishes about medical care, and more. It explains the benefits of proper planning and safeguarding your data in an online world.
