George Washington had a Trust

March 6, 2023

George Washington's birthday, also known as Presidents' Day, is a holiday that celebrates the life and legacy of the first President of the United States. As part of his legacy, George Washington is known for his use of trusts in estate planning.

No, George Washington was not the first person to use a trust in the United States. Trusts have been used for centuries as a way to manage and protect assets, and they were commonly used in England and other parts of Europe before they became popular in the United States.

In fact, the first trust in the United States was created in the early 18th century, several decades before George Washington was born. The trust was established by a wealthy merchant named Thomas Tillinghast, who used it to manage his assets and ensure that his property was passed down to his family members according to his wishes.

However, George Washington is known to have used trusts in his estate planning. In his will, he established a trust to manage his Mount Vernon estate after his death and to provide for his wife and other family members. The trust was designed to ensure that his estate was managed properly and that his assets were protected for future generations. This was an early example of using trusts as part of an estate plan, and it helped to set a precedent for future generations of Americans who would use trusts to manage and protect their assets.

The Mount Vernon estate, which was managed by a trust established by George Washington in his will, has undergone several changes over the years.

After Washington's death, the estate was managed by his nephew, Bushrod Washington, who also served as one of the first justices of the U.S. Supreme Court. Bushrod managed the estate until his death in 1829, at which point it was inherited by his nephew, John Augustine Washington.

In 1858, John Augustine Washington sold the Mount Vernon estate to the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association, a group of women who were dedicated to preserving the estate as a historic site. The association raised funds to purchase and maintain the estate, and they have continued to operate it as a museum and educational center to this day.

The Mount Vernon Ladies' Association established a new trust to manage the estate, which has been in operation ever since. The trust is responsible for the ongoing maintenance and preservation of the estate, as well as for managing the many programs and events that take place there throughout the year.

The Mount Vernon Trust, as it is now known, continues to be an important institution in the United States, and it serves as a reminder of George Washington's legacy as a statesman, soldier, and founding father of the nation.

So, while George Washington's birthday is primarily a celebration of his life and achievements as a statesman, it's also a reminder of his contributions to the field of estate planning and the enduring legacy of his use of trusts.
