Introducing Games Like Wordle to Seniors

February 21, 2022

Keeping our minds active in our later years has been shown to stave off cognitive decline. Lots of fun games exist to help with this mission. The latest to grow in popularity is Wordle. Wordle is a free game where you guess a five-letter word through deduction and are limited to 6 tries. There is one word every day, which is the same for everyone (what a unifying concept!). A new puzzle is released every 24 hours. The game is available for free online at powerlanguage.co.uk/wordle

Family members looking for ways to help elderly loved ones stay engaged and using their brains can help them get hooked on these types of games. Brain training may help improve your memory, response time and logic skills. Prior to the Wordle craze, Soduku was the leading game known to improve brain function.

Sudoku is a number placement game that relies on short-term memory. To complete a Sudoku puzzle, you look ahead and follow trails of consequences. The game is based on the simple principles of using numbers 1-9, filling in the blank spaces based on deductive reasoning, and never repeating any numbers within each square, row or column. This type of planning helps improve short-term memory and concentration. You can play Sudoku online, on an app, or on paper.

Crosswords are a classic brain trainer, accessing not only verbal language but memory from many dimensions of knowledge and trivia. There are many ways to do crossword puzzles, both online and off. One of the most popular is the New York Times daily crossword. Subscribers can access it here.

Claiming to have the world's largest collection of brain teasers, Braingle's free website provides more than 15,000 puzzles, games, and other brain teasers. Braingle has a wide variety of offerings, including optical illusions, codes and ciphers, and trivia quizzes.

The benefits of brain games are often the result of neuroplasticity which is the ability of the brain to modify its structure, chemistry, and function in response to a challenge. As you play brain games, your brain is adapting and rewiring itself to improve its performance.
