Shortcuts and Estate Planning: Why Skipping a Step Might Cost You More

August 24, 2023

In today's fast-paced world, everyone's looking for a shortcut. Whether it's to save money, time, or hassle, we often think taking a shortcut is the smarter move. A recent article in The Independent paints a vivid picture of this mentality in the world of air travel, but it also provides a poignant analogy for estate planning.

Meet Logan Parson, a teenager who took his first solo flight from Gainesville, Florida to New York. Except, New York wasn’t his final stop. Logan planned to employ a trick known as “skiplagging” or “hidden-city ticketing”, whereby he’d disembark at the layover in Charlotte - his actual destination. Why? Because sometimes, bizarrely, it’s cheaper to book a flight with an additional leg and not complete the journey.

Now, Logan's tactic might seem savvy. It exploits airline pricing schemes, allowing the traveler to pay less. In Logan's case, he ended up detained, and his parents were forced to purchase a new direct flight. While there's currently no law against skiplagging, airlines have their own rules. Flouting these can result in penalties, from lost travel points to added fees.

This story isn't just about airline tickets. It's emblematic of a broader approach to decision-making and, interestingly, mirrors some shortcuts that people take in estate planning.

Here's the correlation: Estate planning is a complex procedure. The goal is to ensure your assets are passed on in the manner you deem fit, with minimal taxes and legal complications. Yet, many seek shortcuts. Perhaps it's using a basic will template found online, or not updating beneficiaries after significant life events. These might seem like time-saving, cost-effective measures in the moment.

But what happens when life throws a curveball? Just as Logan found himself in an interrogation room, unanticipated issues can arise in estate planning. Assets might not be distributed as intended, or families could face hefty tax burdens. And much like the airlines, the legal system has its own set of stringent rules. Flouting these, even inadvertently, can lead to costly consequences.

Logan's father stated his concerns, especially since his son was a minor, emphasizing that a warning would've been preferable to the harsh measures taken. This sentiment is echoed by many who traverse the estate planning process without adequate guidance. By the time they realize their missteps, it's often too late, leading to added expenses, stress, and complications.
