As more Maryland residents become confident using online banking, keeping personal calendars on mobile phones and using devices like Alexa in the home, it may still be concerning to have personal medical information online. Many medical files tend to be physical paper files either stored in home offices or with medical providers. With various medical providers needing access to other providers’ files, it makes sense to move to digital files, but that still causes concerns regarding online safety and patient privacy.
An app called Mind Your Loved Ones (MYLO) was recently created to solve this problem. With a focus on security and privacy as well as ease of use, the app has been researched by the American Bar Association and recommended for use. The app allows a patient to send medical information directly to healthcare providers, insurance companies, caregivers and even family members via email or text.
The way it works is that a patient downloads the MYLO app onto a smart phone or tablet. He or she then adds all the pertinent medical information needed by following intuitive prompts. The information contained in the app falls under the guidance and regulations of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA) since it houses personal health information. To keep this information private and secure, the app stores the information locally on the phone or tablet, not in the cloud. MYLO has no access to the information uploaded onto the app beyond the user’s name and email address.
The types of information typically stored on MYLO includes:
-health care advance directives
-prescriptions
-contact information for all medical service providers
-insurance cards
-medical notes
With MYLO you can create multiple user profiles so that the one app contains this information for several family members. The app also has the capability to keep track of medical appointments, prescription changes and even monitor vital signs and produce reports. You can manage who has access to the information such as caregivers and adult children. It makes it easy for the right person to access critical health information and legal documents in emergency situations.
