After the hardships of the pandemic, this year many seniors are looking forward to a more “normal” holiday season with in-person visits from family and friends. Ensuring that the elderly are included and connected with younger generations is vital to their well-being and mental health. Here are some ways grandparents and grandkids can connect this holiday season:
- Bake together. Even simple store-bought sugar cookie dough can be an easy way to safely get in the kitchen together and enjoy cutting out holiday shapes and decorating with sprinkles and icing.
- Watch holiday shows and movies. With all the streaming devices available, there is no shortage of holiday shows this year. You can choose something new or dive into one of the many classics. Grab some popcorn, treats and a blanket and the whole family can enjoy this together.
- Make holiday crafts. Making cards, ornaments, garland and DIY gifts offers endless hours of connection through creativity.
- Volunteer together. Whether you ring the bell together for the Salvation army, deliver meals to those in need, or attend an event hosted by a local church or philanthropy, serving and giving together can be a powerful bonding experience.
- Decorate. Help decorate the senior’s home or nursing home room with festive holiday décor.
- Arrange a flower centerpiece. Grab a collection of flowers from a florist or grocery store and let the kids and seniors cut the stems and arrange in a vase. They can decorate the vase as well for even more creative fun.
- Make a family scrapbook. Print out pictures so that they can be combined and decorated into a family scrapbook that can be passed down for generations.
- Enjoy a hot chocolate bar and game night. Put out hot chocolate with various toppings and play board games.
- Make a gingerbread house. You can buy a ready-made kit or assemble graham crackers, icing and various types of candy. The icing holds the graham crackers together to make the house and the candy serves as decorations to make windows, doors and other home accessories.
